Thank you & Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ giveaway
I’ve always had the dream of doing something that I built myself, something I could stand for. At the end of 2017 I decided that it is time to go and do what I’ve always dreamed about. So, I quit my day job as an electrical engineer in February 2018 and launched 5upercircuits. Initially, I just wanted to build products that people actually care about. Then, I slowly came to the conclusion that the whole product development process might not only be fun and entertaining to me, but also other people. That’s when I decided to live stream all development and include people in the process as much as possible.
The decision to do live streaming was possibly the best thing I could do at the start of 5upercircuits. Sure, it’s a challenge to stream and also develop at the same time. But, in just a couple months I’ve met and talked to countless people that I would have never met without live streaming. Every single one of you has given me so much joy, feedback, support and motivation. That’s why I dedicate this post to you. I want to take the opportunity and tell you a little bit more about my feelings, goals and thoughts for 5upercircuits. Finally, I’ll give away a Raspberry Pi 3 model B+ to say thank you for such an awesome 3 months.
It’s been an incredible 3 months
It’s way too early to say anything like “I made it”, but I can say that the past 3 months have been awesome and that I’m making progress. Before I started 5upercircuits I had no clue about social media or live streaming. Now, I’m doing live streams Monday to Friday, got a Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram account. Together we gathered like-minded people who follow 5upercircuits’ social media and watch the live streams. All social accounts counted together our group has about the head count of half the size of the village I grew up in (410 followers to be precise)!
Furthermore, during the 3 months we worked hard on our first product the Moment-Rec. We created the first prototype electronics, dived into embedded software development and created the mechanical design for the casing. I’m working in my own home lab. So, during the development of Moment-Rec I had to buy equipment and tools. I also realized that I didn’t have any workflow set in place. We literally started with zero components in our library. I setup a local server for backup and revision control with Gitlab. All those steps took time and effort but were needed to have a good and fast workflow in the future.
I don’t want to show off any achievement. But, I would like to show you that 5upercircuits is making progress and that you played a big part in it. You shared my tweets, liked my posts and watched the live streams. It’s thanks to your support that I was able to stay motivated and keep on pushing. Thank you very much.
What are the challenges?
Oh boy, where should I even start. I can’t even count it 😀
One of the challenges as a development streamer on Twitch will probably always be trying to focus both on viewer entertainment and development. It’s definitely true that I get interrupted quite often during the live stream. However, I believe that would also happen at the office. Plus, I don’t take any breaks during live streams. Additionally, I am fortunate enough to get a ton of support and help from viewers. Believe it or not, there are really smart people coming to watch my streams. Professionals and experts in electrical, mechanical and software engineering, marketing pro’s, website designers, etc. That’s a huge benefit.
That brings me to another set of challenges. The dream of creating products myself and the way I start this journey means that there is basically no education or job experience that could have prepared me for this challenge. It’s just a fact that I will have to learn a thousand things along the way not only in marketing, social media, software/mechanical development and legal but also in electrical engineering. It’s great that there are so many smart people on stream. However, that also means I have to get comfortable with looking stupid when I learn something new. It’s a good practice to kill the fear of failure. And let me tell you I fail horribly during my live streams 😀 if you’d even know lol. But, the only thing that matters is that 5upercircuits makes progress.
So, over the course of these three months I came up with an interesting thought:
No matter what goal you are trying to reach. You will ultimately find out that you lack the resources, money, experience, knowledge and even time. It’s probably not the right time to do it anyway and it’s also certain that you’ll fail.
However, you still feel like going after it. No matter your situation. Do what you can in exactly this moment. It doesn’t need to be perfect it doesn’t even really need to be good enough. It just needs to be better than what you did previously.
Are you doing this full time? How do you earn money?
Yes, I’m actually crazy enough to just quit my job and do this full-time 😛 . Currently I don’t earn any significant money to support my life. However, I’ve got an awesome and lovely wife who works full-time, so I can pursue my dream for now. I don’t plan on making millions with 5upercircuits, but I do want to continue this journey and life my dream. So, I hope that I can earn enough from selling my products and continue doing live streams and sustain my life.
I don’t expect you to become a subscriber on Twitch or donate money or bits. However, if you love what I’m doing so much that you still would like to donate or subscribe then that’s definitely awesome.
What does 5upercircuits’ future look like?
Moment-Rec is now in the prototype stage. As soon as we have a minimum working sample, I’m going to launch a crowdfunding campaign to finance further development. Getting a product from prototype to a commercial product is much work and pretty expensive. Most expensive are the certification tests for CE, FCC, etc. Furthermore, crowdfunding also serves as a marketing verification to measure demand for a product like Moment-Rec. I plan to start crowdfunding this summer.
In the farther future we are going to start new projects that will lead to new products as well. Once Moment-Rec is done, it will be a lot easier and faster to develop new products. Because, we now have good workflows and tools in place.
